Business Intelligence Demo VHD (Part 5 of 10) – SQL 2012 SP1
Now we’ll load the Content Pack for SQL 2012 which requires the SQL install media ISO. First I browse for “en_sql_server_2012_enterprise_edition_with_sp1_x64_dvd_1227976.iso” and mount as drive letter D:\. Also, make sure that you only have a D:\ removable drive. Having multiple CD-ROM drives (D:\, E:\, etc.) will confuse the script.
Click OK to being Install.
Reading the file “C:\Demos\SQLServer2012\Script and Setup Guide\SQL Server 2012 Package Installation Instructions.docx” we see …
The Pre-Requisites for this installation are the following:
- Windows Server 2012 installed with the AD DS Role for the Contoso.com Domain
- A Licensed or evaluation version of SQL 2012 SP1 from Microsoft http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/hh225126.aspx
- The SQL Server 2012 SP1 ISO should be mounted as Drive D:
- The Active Directory Content Pack Demo 2.0 has been installed
Clicking Install will extract the script and begin the SQL automated install.
SQL will prompt for you to confirm settings by clicking Next many times. Accept the values given and continue.
SQL will now install the needed components and take a while (~30 min) to perform this.
After Instance Multidimensionale and before Install of Powerpivot instance, I had to reboot the server. At least I thogut so and did so, because of the check said I had to. Well I ran the Content Pack installer again, and just cancelled on the 2 first instance installs. The script continued and all the other instances installed fine.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, I probably did the same reboot. There were so many steps and this was the first install I ran, so I was trying to capture as many screenshots as possible.
Can Is use VMware ?
I can not remove CD drive (E:).
When I ran this step. It had finished but did not really install SQL Server 2012 SP1.
Is this because I still have CD Drive (E:) in VMware ?
Yes, this should work fine on VMWare.
Take a look under “C:DemosSQLServer2012” to see the SQL install scripts. There should be a drive letter (D:, E:) reference to “setup.exe” and it might be helpful to make the CD-Drive letter D: and see if that works OK.

I wanted to document my install experience with screenshots here, but am not very familiar with the script code.
I just tried this and I did not get any of the SQL windows you show. The content installer just did everything and it did it wrong.
The next step fails with the AutoSPInstaller, it can’t find the sql instance. Any suggestions?
Maybe the MSBI CodePlex project has changed since then. I’d suggest two ideas. (1) load the AutoSPInstaller XML in c:ContentPacks up to https://autospinstaller.azurewebsites.net for parsing and (2) make the needed SQL alias by hand in both 32-bit and 64-bit way https://www.spjeff.com/2013/01/03/two-ways-to-check-sql-aliases-for-sharepoint/
